The Call and Response "Conversations" project has brought together local artists to explore creative expression and foster community engagement, emphasising the impact of the individuals involved. Initiated and organised by Kamila Waleszkiewicz, this two-phase initiative celebrated Inglewood's rich cultural fabric through various artistic mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and textile art.
Conversations I (2023): Laying the Groundwork
Running at Inglewood Arts Hub (Perth WA) from January to April 2023, the first phase introduced the "call and response" concept through collaborative sessions. Artists engaged with local themes and histories, fostering camaraderie and pushing creative boundaries. Inspired by Jillian Ciemitis' involvement in an international collaborative initiative “Sister City II” and Louise Wells' "Suburban Secrets - Art Trail & History Walk" project, participants created new artworks reflecting Inglewood's history, culture, and nature. The project culminated in the "Conversations" exhibition on April 24, 2023, marking a significant milestone in launching a platform for artistic collaboration and community engagement.
Conversations II (2024): Deepening Impact
Following the success of its initial phase, “Conversations II” ran from February to June 2024, culminating in an impactful exhibition held from April 24 to May 9, 2024. This phase highlighted a diverse range of artworks celebrating local culture, all centered around the theme "Portrayal of Inglewood”.
Transformative Experiences
Throughout both phases, artists reported significant personal and professional growth. Jane Marron described the project as a "tapestry of like-minded artists," while Eimear Flynn celebrated its focus on local culture and history. Iwona Van Niekerk discovered a sense of belonging and overcame challenges such as public speaking. Anita Grewal rekindled her artistic passion, and Graham Hay noted that the group's creative horizons expanded through collaborative experiences. Kelly Ha emphasized how the project fostered a strong sense of community and engagement, allowing participants to explore diverse creative thinking paths. These experiences highlight how the project nurtured personal growth, artistic development, and meaningful connections among its participants.
By bridging individual and collective artistic practices, the Call and Response project has set a benchmark for future community-driven artistic initiatives in Inglewood and beyond. It demonstrates the power of collaboration in transforming creative practices and enriching the local arts community.
